Course Outline & Career Prospect

This vocational course ending in the conferring of a Diploma in Architectural Assistantship, has been designed with the intent of providing an outcome based program to develop professional assistants who would be adept at handling industry based jobs both in the drawing office as well as on the construction site. This program prepares learners for jobs that are based in manual or practical activities. It is sometimes referred to as technical education, as the learner directly develops expertise in a particular group of techniques. As directed by AICTE, the program demands a good percentage of the curriculum be conducted through apprenticeship and hence this course is divided into theoretical and studio based institutional activity and apprenticeship under the supervision of knowledge partners.

Career Opportunity

  • Employment opportunities shall then be as assistants in architectural offices, both as drafting hands and as site facilitators.
  • The scope of employment in the public sector and in government service or urban development agencies may include jobs as quantity surveying assistants and land survey assistants in addition to jobs as drafting assistants.
  • Additional training at site co-ordination can ensure major site related jobs in the real estate sector and infrastructure planning sectors also.
  • Training in the energy sector could also allow the diploma holder to further train as site coordinators in the sustainable building sector and the energy efficiency category in buildings.

    The theoretical subjects include

    • Basic Sciences – Basic Mathematics, Mechanics and Physics; this would prepare the students to deal with real knowledge of measurements, analysis and understanding of building services
    • History of Architecture – to prepare students for understanding of architectural theories and its evolution; helps in understanding of architectural elements and their design
    • Building Materials – helps in understanding materials and their properties, and their use in various types of buildings and locations
    • Building services – helps in understanding of application of mechanical and electrical services in buildings
    • Climatology and energy studies – helps in understanding of the macro and micro environment and how building design should respond to it
    • Landscape and site planning – helps in understanding of the context and location of the built environment.
    • Theory of structures – helps in understanding of the structural system of buildings and building parts.

    • Drawing – both manual and CAD; helps in communicating architectural thought and concepts
    • Surveying – helps in site control and estimation
    • Estimation and Specifications – helps in understanding of material requirements, pricing and control
    • Elements of Construction – helps in understanding of drawings and developing a sense of physical spaces
    • Design – helps in understanding design elements and theories through a practical approach

    The on-job training with knowledge/skill partners shall include learning at drawing offices and at site which include data collection, analysis, report writing and site management practices.
